Through 15+ years of Corporate jobs, in some of the top companies in the world (Lucent, AOL, Microsoft…)

I didn’t feel free. I didn’t feel in control over my career or my life.

It felt like I was in the backseat of the car. Being driven around.

Reorg happened ➔ “Oh, we’re going this way”
My Manager Changed ➔ “Oh, we’re going that way”
Annual Performance Reviews ➔ “Who knows how they are going to decide my fate?”
(I can admit now - I always hated the whole process of Performance Reviews)

Sometimes I would get kicked out of the car (laid off) and have to find another ride. This was acutely traumatic and painful.

At other times, I got out of one car and got into - what seemed like - a newer, shinier car (job change).

But after the newness wore off, I realized, I am still in the backseat. With little control over my career or life.

Now I live a life, where I enjoy these four degrees of freedom:

What: Freedom to do what I want. Do the work that I love doing (mostly Power BI).
Who: Freedom to work with people that I enjoy working with.
When: Complete freedom to choose my hours and days
Where: Freedom to work from anywhere in the world. From my home in US, traveling around the world, or spending months in India with my parents.
