What does My Life of Financial Freedom πΈ Look Like?
After giving up my high-paying job at Microsoft, I struggled for many yearsβ¦
Before finding my path to freedom and fulfillment π.
Below is an honest account of what my life looks like. What I donβt have, and what I have.
My Mom
I don't have a mansion with a pool πββοΈ, but I have my mom.
We felt like we had almost lost her in 2021. She suffered a severe health crisis. I rushed from USA to India βοΈ, to be by her side. And thankfully she recovered.
When she was ill, I had resolved that I would spend at least two months in India each year.
But then she got better, and it wasn't *necessary* anymore.
But I realized, that now that she was healthyβ¦it was more *important* than ever to spend time with her.
Wouldn't I rather spend time with her while she's still fit? When we can still go out for walks in the park? Go watch a movie together? Or just watch the sun set π
?
So I plan to continue to go to India for at least two months each year. Even spend four month, six months or longer if needed.
But here's the best part :-)
When I want to visit momβ¦There's no leave application to the boss, there's no manager approval.
I just book my tickets and go β. Because I work for myself.
After 15+ years in corporate America, I quit my job at Microsoft and started my own business. I struggled for a while, but eventually I was able to create a life of freedom and fulfillment π. I may not have a mansion with a pool, but it does let me spend as much time as I need with my mom.

Hiking!
I don't have a luxury sports car, but I do have hiking in my life π₯Ύ. I love the outdoors and I go hiking once every week - and on a weekday too!
I keep my work and meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. That means I have - Monday, Wednesday or Friday to pick from when planning my weekly hike.
And when you live in Seattle, that's really important :-) Because the weather is unpredictable and it rains a lot π§οΈ.
So every Sunday, I check the weather forecast and whichever day has the best weather π (Mon/Wed/Fri), is the day I hike :-)
I have lived in the Northwest for 18+ years . But I feel like I've just discovered it in the past few years, since I started hiking. Hiking has shown me the beautiful outdoors π²π, but also helped me find myself in a way π.
It's been a gift. And I feel truly grateful.
But it wasn't always this way. For 15+ years I had a 9-to-5 Corporate Job π¨βπΌ which consumed my life. I barely had time π€ for myself or my family.
Finally I quit my job at Microsoft and started my own business. I struggled for a while, but eventually I was able to create a life of freedom and fulfillment. I may not have a luxury sports car, but I do get to hike every week π₯Ύ :-)

My Health
I don't have money π² to burn π₯, but I do have my health πͺ. In fact, at 44 right now, I may be in the best shape of my life.
But it wasn't always like this. I spent 15+ years in corporate jobs.
And of course, I always knew that my health was important. But the *important*, often fell victim to the *urgent*.
There was always something going on at work that felt urgent π₯. Some new project, re-orgs, layoffs, dealing with new manager or something else.
My work took up a *BIG* chunk of all time and life.
And the *important* things - like taking care of my health - often fell by the wayside.
Now my life is different.
> I work out twice a week in the gym with my daughter (she's my gym partner).
> On other days, I do cardio or meditation at home (for my physical and mental fitness)
> I have time to eat healthy (you often eat unhealthy when in a rush)
> And overall I am relaxed and away from the stress I had to deal with every single day
I don't have money π² to burn π₯, but I do have my health πͺ :-)

Time to Spend with My Kids
I don't have the money to party around the world π₯, but I do have homework :-). Yes I love homework! Because my daughter and I π¨βπ§, often work together on her Math homework.
My life wasn't always like this. There was a time when I was so busy at work I could barely pull myself away for even big events like birthdays.
But now I have time βΊ.
I have time to be around my kids. Drop them off and pick them up from school or classes. Talk to them when they are struggling a bit and offer to be their study buddy :-)
Now I do feel lucky that my daughter took me up on my offer. And it's been such a gift. I love the time we spend together doing homework π. Sometimes I help her with a tough problem, but many times she's the one who helps me. She explains the concept to me or corrects my mistakes.
I told friend about this, and I said, "I love π these small moments. Because I think *parenting* is made of small moments like this".
To which they responded, "Not just parenting Avi, *life* is made-up of these small moments".
I just feel lucky and blessed that I'm able to enjoy and cherish these small moments of life.
How did I get here? I quit my job at Microsoft and started my own business. I struggled for a while, but eventually I was able to create a life of freedom and fulfillment π.

Friendship + Adventure
I don't fly around the world in a private jet π©, but I did get to visit my friend in Kenya π¦.
Robert lives in Kenya and we had met in the Power BI π community. Right from our first conversation, I felt the synergy β‘ between us. As if, both of us were dialed in to the same frequency.
Robert and I soon ended up working together in our company. As colleagues and friends, we spent hundreds of hours on zoom calls π». Sometimes talking about work, but quite often talking about life.
So it seemed a bit crazy π€ͺ to fly all the way to Kenya to meet him.
And as I arrived in Kenya after a 22 hours flight, I was definitely questioning my decision.
But as soon as I stepped out of the airport and hugged Robert who was waiting there for meβ¦I knew it was worth it.
The time I spent with Robert and with his loved onesβ¦is a cherished memory beyond any value π.
Something like this, just wouldn't have been possible for me in my old life with a corporate job π¨βπΌ.
Not just the money, the biggest reason was - I just wouldn't have the *time* π.
Work consumed so much of my life, I barely had time for myself or my family. How could I make time to visit a friend in Kenya???
But thankfully my new life is different. I quit my job at Microsoft and started my own business. I struggled for a while, but eventually I was able to create a life of freedom and fulfillment. I don't fly around the world in a private jet, but I did get to visit my friend in Kenya π .
